Combining High Productivity With Sustainable Environmental Best Practice

ACF has adopted a range of management practices to care for
the soils, surrounding ecosystems and the environment.

Capture of nutrient-rich irrigation runoff through a series of recycling dams for protection of the marine ecosystem.

Soil health is maintained through a regular cycle of planting legume crops such as soy and mung beans as an 18-month break crop to cane.

Installed solar roof panels with an aggregate capacity of 90kw, equivalent to annual planting of 3,000 trees or 55,000 kg/annum avoided coal burnt.

Australian Cane Farms Limited is an accredited grower under the Smartcane BMP program.

Endorsed by the Queensland government, Smartcane BMP is a world-class best practice system for growing sugarcane in Australia. Industry researchers and sugarcane farmers have collaborated to develop the BMP standards based on the twin objectives of improving farm productivity and lowering environmental impact. The overall effect is to ensure both ecological and financial sustainability for sugar cane farmers.

SmartCane BMP focuses on three core activities:

  • Drainage & irrigation

  • Soil health & plant nutrition management

  • Pest, disease & weed management

SmartCane BMP is a framework for:

  • Effective solutions to on-farm productivity.

  • Identifying technology, methodology and practical techniques to achieve more with less.

  • Access to the latest information, science & research.

  • Demonstrating to all stakeholders that Queensland sugar is produced in a sustainable way.
